SUSFUR Workshop on Sustainable and Circular Furniture in Slovenia
As part of the SUSFUR project, Slovenian partners successfully organized a local training workshop on sustainability and circularity in the furniture industry. Implemented in collaboration with the Secondary School for Woodworking Škofja Loka, the training brought together participants to strengthen their understanding of circular economy principles and promote innovative, resource-efficient approaches to furniture design and production.
Throughout the training, participants were introduced to the foundations of the circular economy in the furniture sector, exploring topics such as sustainability in the furniture industry, the identification of challenges and user needs, and teamwork in developing innovative project ideas and proposals. These activities laid the groundwork for designing products fully aligned with circular economy principles.
An important component of the training was the practical exploration of material recovery and reuse. Participants visited the Barje waste collection center, where they examined discarded furniture and reclaimed wood materials, gaining first-hand insight into the potential of transforming waste into valuable resources. Part of the collected materials was later incorporated into their own product concepts.
The training also provided opportunities for participants to develop creative sketches and concepts for circularly designed products, combining functionality, innovation, and sustainability. In the carpentry workshop of the Secondary School for Woodworking Škofja Loka, participants translated their ideas into tangible prototypes using both traditional woodworking equipment and advanced CNC technology, gaining practical experience in sustainable production processes.
The workshop demonstrated how education, collaboration, and hands-on learning can foster creativity and innovation while supporting the transition toward a more sustainable and circular furniture sector.
