SUSFUR Local Training on Sustainable Furniture Production in Bosnia and Herzegovina
As part of the SUSFUR project, a local training programme was organized at Merceza d.o.o. Srebrenik in cooperation with the Mechanical School in Srebrenik. The training brought together secondary school students and professors from the CNC Programming Department, providing them with an opportunity to strengthen their knowledge of CNC technology, sustainable furniture production, and circular economy principles through direct engagement with industry professionals.
Throughout the training, participants were introduced to the objectives of the SUSFUR project and the importance of sustainable furniture production, circular economy principles, and stronger cooperation between vocational education and industry. Through presentations, guided discussions, and company tours, they gained valuable insight into the operations of Merceza d.o.o., exploring production workflows, modern manufacturing processes, occupational safety standards, and the technologies used in contemporary wood processing.
A significant part of the programme focused on CNC programming and its practical application in furniture manufacturing. Participants observed CNC machinery in operation, learned how furniture components are designed and prepared for production, and became familiar with the materials, production processes, and quality standards required for efficient manufacturing. Working alongside company mentors, they gained a deeper understanding of how advanced technologies support precision, productivity, and innovation in the furniture industry.
The training also emphasized sustainable production practices and circular economy concepts. Participants explored practical examples of waste reduction, resource efficiency, and the reuse of wood residues generated during manufacturing. Through interactive workshops and team exercises, they developed ideas for transforming wood waste into innovative products and designed sustainable furniture concepts based on efficient material use and circular design principles.
The programme concluded with participant presentations and discussions, providing an opportunity to reflect on the knowledge and practical skills gained throughout the training. The initiative highlighted the importance of connecting education with industry practice, equipping young people with relevant competencies while promoting innovation, sustainability, and circular approaches in the wood and furniture sector.
