SUSFUR Training in Ljubljana

As part of the SUSFUR project – Promoting Sustainable Furniture Production in the Western Balkans, a five-day training for VET providers was successfully held from 22–26 September 2025 at the Biotechnical Faculty, Department of Wood Science, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia.
The training gathered experts, educators, and practitioners from the EU and Western Balkans, to strengthen skills and knowledge in sustainable furniture production with a focus on the circular economy and the reuse of materials.
Training overview:
Lectures and discussions –
Participants explored key topics such as the service life of wood products, cascading use of wood, sustainable surface treatments, recycled wood composites, new production technologies, and innovative design using reused materials.

Study visits –
The group visited the Ljubljana Reuse Center and M Sora company, where they observed real-life examples of how circular economy principles are applied in practice – from reuse and refurbishment of furniture to sustainable joinery production.

Practical workshop –
Hands-on sessions enabled participants to design and develop new furniture prototypes using reclaimed wood, applying eco-design methods and innovative technologies.

The program was led by renowned experts in wood science and technology: Dr. Boštjan Lesar, Dr. Miha Humar, Dr. Sergej Medved, Dr. Marko Petrič, Dr. Gorazd Fajdiga, and Dr. Mirko Kariž, with contributions from industry professionals and partner organizations.
The training strengthened the capacities of VET providers to integrate sustainable practices into their teaching and to transfer new skills to learners. By combining theory, practice, and industry insights, the program contributed to preparing the next generation of professionals for the green transition in the furniture sector.
